Abrus precatorius seeds (commonly known as rosary peas or crab's eyes) are primarily utilized in decorative arts, traditional medicine, and historical measuring. Because they contain the lethal toxin abrin, direct ingestion is highly dangerous, but the seeds have a wide array of cultural and pharmacological applications

1. Arts, Crafts, and Jewelry

Decorative Beading: The seeds are bright red with a distinct black spot. They are frequently drilled and strung to create colorful necklaces, bracelets, rosaries, and percussion instruments.

Historical Measurement: Historically, the seeds possess a remarkably uniform weight (about

grams). They were utilized by jewelers in South Asia as a standard unit of weight (known as a rati) for measuring gold and precious stones.

2. Traditional and Herbal Medicine

While highly toxic in their raw state, practitioners of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and African folk medicine use detoxified versions of the seeds to treat various ailments:

Skin and Hair Conditions: A seed paste is often applied topically to treat baldness, vitiligo, and skin itchiness. Extracts have also been traditionally studied for promoting hair growth.

Respiratory and Systemic Relief: Traditional formulations use the seeds to address coughs, sore throats, asthma, and rheumatism.

Anti-Worm and Parasite: In some cultures, pulverized dried seeds are ingested in small, measured doses for two days to eliminate intestinal worms.

3. Contraceptive and Abortifacient Applications

Fertility Regulation: In several African and Asian indigenous traditions, seed extracts are used as an oral contraceptive or as an abortifacient to hasten labor and induce abortion.

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning

All parts of the Abrus precatorius plant contain abrin, one of the most potent plant toxins known.

Swallowing a single intact seed may not cause poisoning if it passes completely through the digestive system.

However, chewing or crushing the seed releases the toxin, which can cause severe vomiting, organ failure, and death.

Because of these extreme health risks, medicinal use without proper professional detoxification (Shodhana) is strongly discouraged and inherently unsafe.
